Radon comes up out of the ground, so it does not care how new or old a Platte City home is. The gas forms from uranium breaking down in the soil and rock under the Northland, then works its way up through the slab and into the lowest level of the house. I have pulled elevated readings on the newer builds out by Running Horse and Prairie View just as often as on the established homes near downtown. Platte County is part of the Kansas City metro, which is a well known radon area, and testing is the only way to know where your specific house lands.

How the mitigation system works

When a test reads at or above the 4.0 pCi/L action level, I install an active sub-slab depressurization system. That means coring a hole through the basement or slab floor, sealing a PVC pipe into it, and running that pipe up through an inline fan that pulls the soil gas out from under the foundation and vents it safely above the roofline. Most Platte City basements are a few hours of work, and I route the pipe to stay out of the way. Then I retest to confirm the number dropped below the limit.
