Radon in Warrensburg and Johnson County, MO

People sometimes assume radon is a Kansas problem because of how often Johnson County, KS comes up, but the gas does not check state lines. It comes up out of the bedrock and soil, and west-central Missouri has plenty of it. The EPA flags this part of the state for elevated radon potential, and the only way to know your number is to test. How the mitigation system works

The fix is an active sub-slab depressurization system. I core a hole through the basement or slab, seal a PVC pipe into it, and run that pipe up through an inline fan that pulls the radon-laden soil gas out from under the foundation before it can enter the house, venting it safely above the roofline. On a typical Warrensburg basement the install runs a few hours. I route the pipe to stay out of the way, and a couple of days later I retest to confirm the level dropped below the EPA limit. Older homes with a crawl space or a partial basement take a slightly different approach, and I sort that out when I see the house.
